About the brand

As one of the most famous brands of American whiskey, Jack Daniel’s is masterfully-crafted Tennessee whiskey prized the world over for its quality, bespoke distillation, and perfectly smooth finish. Officially founded in 1875 by Jasper Newton ‘Jack’ Daniel and lay-preacher Dan Call, Jack Daniel’s has since expanded to offer various affiliated brands including Gentlemen Jack and Tennessee Fire. After leaving home at a very early age, Jack was taken in by Call and learned the art of whiskey making from another historically significant figure; Nathan ‘Nearest’ Green - an enslaved African-American man who worked as Call’s Master Distiller and who is the namesake of famed Uncle Nearest Whiskey. Jack Daniel’s very first iteration, Old No. 7 (now known as Jack’s Black Label), was first launched in 1876 and has gone on to become the top-selling whiskey in the world.

Nectar ready apple butterscotch and maple on the button. Scents sweet contrasted with no.7. On the sense of taste vanilla hits first yet not overwhelming trailed by light maple and a somewhat smokey and pepper-zest. Finish blurs to light sweet caramel with a trace of vanilla. Effectively the second best arrangement offering from JD behind the bolder (and higher ABV) Sinatra arrangement.

Tasting Notes

Nose

The nose is relatively light and soft, and required some time to open up before I started getting any defined flavors. I found caramel, sweet corn, a few notes of ripe banana, and a hint of rye spice. All of these flavors are wrapped in a prominent note of maple wood from the finishing process.

Taste

On the palate, this whiskey is again relatively soft with a thin mouthfeel. Initially, there is plenty of sweet maple syrup and dry oak, and a mild spice develops mid-palate. Other than the sweet notes and some muted baking spices, I really didn’t find much more flavor. The overall profile was slightly tannic and wood-heavy.

Finish

The finish is medium, dry, and relatively unimpressive. Sweet caramel and maple dominate along with mild alcohol burn that tapers off very quickly. The heavy wood notes define the finish and really prevent any additional flavors from developing.
